Even though it looks unusual, it’s also strange and humorous. However improbable it may seem, such scenarios often happen. The boat in this image is a sloop. In olden times, they were the most common type of pirate ship, designed to sail very quickly with masts that soared above the water.
Today, a modern sloop is a sailboat with a single mast, a headsail, and a mainsail. A Bermuda rig or gaff rig is what you’ll find on most of these boats. It’s called a “fore-and-aft” rig because the sails are set at an angle to the wind rather than straight ahead. A sloop, depending on its style and the number of headsails, can be classified as a cutter or a catamaran.
