In perfect coordination, the team lifted the glass and sealed the box shut within seconds. There was no time for hesitation; the movement was fluid and fast, practiced but still nerve-wracking. The lid clicked into place just as the creature lunged upward, barely missing its chance to escape. Martha gasped, her lungs burning from the breath she didn’t realize she’d been holding.
George wasted no time securing the lock, his fingers trembling slightly as he twisted the mechanism. “It’s done,” he announced, and a collective exhale followed. Martha finally released her grip, her hand sore and tingling with numbness. “Is it really over?” she asked, her voice barely more than a whisper, equal parts disbelief and exhaustion.
