Funny Slip
While this looks unusual, it’s also strangely humorous. As unlikely as it seems, situations like this happen more often than you’d think. The boat in this picture is a sloop. In ancient times, this was the most common type of pirate ship, designed for very fast sailing with masts swaying over the water.
Today, a modern sloop is a single-masted sailboat with a foresail and a mainsail. A Bermuda rig or gaff rig is what you typically find on these boats. This is also called a “fore-and-aft” rig because the sails are angled relative to the wind, rather than straight ahead. Depending on the style and number of foresails, a sloop can be classified as a cutter or catboat.
