“Local” Labels That Aren’t

“Locally grown” or “local farm fresh” can make you feel like you’re supporting small nearby producers. But here’s the kicker—there’s often no regulated definition of “local,” and in many chains, that label can mean anything produced within 500 miles—or even more.

Sometimes, the label is just a marketing buzzword. The apples marked as local may come from another state or be stored in cold warehouses for months before hitting your store. To know what’s truly local, check the grower’s name or ask staff directly. Don’t let vague wording trick your wallet.
