Fruits Waxed to Look Fresherh

That shiny apple in the produce section? It may be coated with a layer of wax to keep it looking crisp and fresh. Supermarkets apply food-safe wax to extend shelf life, prevent bruising, and add visual appeal—but they rarely advertise it.

The wax traps moisture inside and gives fruit a glow, even if it’s been in storage for months. It’s not necessarily harmful, but it’s deceptive. If you want to eat the peel, you’re better off scrubbing thoroughly—or choosing organic fruit, which typically has less synthetic coating.
