Veronica Hamel: From Modeling to Memorable Roles in 1979’s “Beyond the Poseidon Adventure”
The image captures the striking presence of Veronica Hamel, a talented actress who first graced the spotlight as a fashion model discovered by the legendary Eileen Ford. In a delightful case of life imitating art, Hamel made her cinematic debut playing a model in the 1971 thriller “Klute,” launching what would become a remarkable acting career.
Hamel’s breakthrough came with supporting roles in major disaster films, including 1979’s “Beyond The Poseidon Adventure” and 1980’s “When Time Ran Out.” However, it was her portrayal of public defender Joyce Davenport in the groundbreaking police drama “Hill Street Blues” that truly cemented her stardom, earning her five Emmy nominations during the show’s seven-season run.
Interestingly, Hamel turned down what could have been another iconic role – Kelly Garrett in “Charlie’s Angels.” Her television credits remained impressive nonetheless, with memorable appearances in series like “Philly” and “Lost,” where she played Margo Shepherd, mother to the show’s central character Jack Shephard.
