Julie Christie as ‘Lara’ in Dr. Zhivago (1965)

Here we see Julie Christie as Lara, the iconic love interest in the 1965 film Dr. Zhivago, adapted from Boris Pasternak’s famous novel. Although the book was a literary sensation in the West, it was banned in the Soviet Union—forcing the film’s producers to look elsewhere for a shooting location. Ultimately, Spain stood in for the snow-covered Russian landscape.

Despite being filmed during Spain’s summer months, the movie convincingly portrayed a frosty winter backdrop. Dr. Zhivago became a critical and commercial triumph, winning five Academy Awards including Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Score, Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction, and Best Costume Design.
