The Vet’s Return
When Dr. Morgan finally returned, his face was visibly pale. Without making eye contact with the children, he looked at Grace and Tom. “Can we speak in the next room?” he asked, his voice low and trembling. Grace’s heart dropped. Whatever he had found, it wasn’t ordinary news. Tom stood and nodded, trying to appear composed. “Of course,” he replied.
They followed Dr. Morgan into a smaller adjacent office, the children watching them leave in silence. Grace felt the knot in her stomach tighten with every step. The door closed behind them, cutting off any glimpse of reassurance. Whatever answers they were about to receive, she feared they might change everything.
