Grace Tries to Distract

Still in the examination room, Grace tried to ease the tension by guiding the kids’ thoughts back to normal life. She gently asked Emma, “Did you finish your homework today?” hoping to shift focus. Emma nodded without looking up, her eyes still fixed on Nyx. Alex tapped distractedly on his phone, clearly too preoccupied to engage.

Grace offered a weak smile. “Maybe we can take Nyx for a walk after this,” she suggested. But her voice didn’t carry much conviction. The weight of uncertainty hung over them. Every attempt to change the subject fell flat, as their minds remained tethered to what might be happening behind the closed door.
